24 seniors named National Merit semi-finalists

Twenty-four members of the Class of 2023 have been named as National Merit Scholarship Program semi-finalists, based on each student’s PSAT/NMSQT scores the organization announced today. Only 16,000 of more than 1.5 million student entrants nationwide received semi-finalist status.

“With these 24 accomplished students, they’ll be able to indicate on their early and regular decision college applications that they excel in standardized testing,” said Phoebe Kingsak, associate director of College Counseling. “This is just one of several important factors in an admissions review, and it will be favorable for our boys. By no means does this guarantee entry anywhere, but again, shows that level of academic preparedness that we really emphasize and highlight at St. Mark’s. This accolade will entice admissions committees to take a closer look at their applications, knowing that they’re already enrolled in a rigorous academic curriculum and that they also are excellent test takers."

The following seniors have been named as semi-finalists:

Sam Adams, Arjun Badi, Henry Baxter, Roome Becker, Morgan Chow, Nikhil Dattatreya, Michael Gao, William Grable, Radford Green, Aaron Greenberg, Renil Gupta, Svanik Jaikumar, Keshav Krishna, Aaron Liu, Stice Neuhoff, Sky Park, Murphy Paul, Akash Raghunathan, Neil Song, Will Spencer, James Thomson, Miles Thornburg, Alexander Wang and Tommy Zheng.

“I feel honored to be included in this group of 24 outstanding students,” said Will Spencer ’23. “I’m thankful to St. Mark’s for preparing me so well for the past 12 years — for the PSAT exam itself and for other academic challenges.”

These academically recognized Marksmen have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit scholarships that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a merit scholarship award, semi-finalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. Over 90 percent of the semi-finalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
