Publications sweep CSPA’s Gold Crowns
All five St. Mark’s Upper School student publications received the Gold Crown award, the highest award given by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, at the conclusion of the organization’s annual convention at Columbia University on March 17.
This is the first time all five publications have received Gold Crowns in the same year.
Publications receiving this distinction include:
- The ReMarker newspaper — which extended its Gold Crown streak to 20 consecutive years, the longest successive streak by a secondary school in the 99-year history of the organization.
- The Marksmen yearbook — this is the yearbook’s eighth Gold Crown designation and first gold designation since 2013.
- Focus special interest magazine — this is the fourth consecutive Gold Crown for the magazine.
- The Marque literary magazine — this publication received its third consecutive Gold Crown and ninth in the past ten years.
- Scientific Marksmen special interest magazine — received its third straight Gold Crown.
CSPA’s Gold Crown was awarded to six high school print newspapers, 16 yearbooks, six special interest magazines and nine literary magazines from publications across the United States and Europe.
Publications were judged on writing and reporting, coverage, design, and photography by a panel of scholastic and media professionals.
These awards are for publications produced during the 2021-2022 school year.
Editors of the respective publications were ReMarker, Austin Williams ’22; Marksmen, Camden Reeves ’22; Focus, Morgan Chow ’23 and Ian Dalrymple ’23; Marque, Thomas Philip ’22 and Ekansh Tambe ’22; and Scientific Marksman, Jonathan Yin ’22 and Jeremy Yu ’22.
Faculty advisers for the publications include Lynn Schwartz, The Marque; Fletcher Carron, Scientific Marksman; and Ray Westbrook, Marksmen, Focus and The ReMarker.
Founded in 1925, CSPA is the nation’s oldest organization for scholastic journalists and is headquartered at Columbia University in New York.
