Let me begin by expressing my appreciation to the many donors and volunteers who generously gave of their time, energy, and financial resources to advance the St. Mark’s mission and support the great work of our teachers and students. I would like to recognize and thank Jon Mosle ’79 for his leadership as Board President over the past two years. His dedication and commitment paved the way for the new Winn Science Center and helped launch Goals for St. Mark’s IV. I also want to thank the Parents’ Association President, Debbie Jenevein, and the Alumni Association President, Dr. Jeff Genecov ’77, for their exemplary leadership.
It is a pleasure to present the following report to you on the 2017-2018 school year. The past year has been filled with considerable progress and achievement.
Just a few short weeks after Manny Acho ’08 addressed the boys at Opening Convocation, we publicly launched Goals for St. Mark’s IV and began pursuing strategic aspirations that will strengthen and improve the experiences of our students in the years to come. One of the most important priorities for the future is to bring greater focus, intentionality, and curricular integration to our Character and Leadership Education efforts. We are firmly committed to helping boys develop into good men and are working to ensure that character development is front and center in all that we do. Teachers, coaches, advisors, and administrators are working hard to guide Marksmen on the path to manhood, challenging them to strive for the highest ideals.
This year, we also broke ground and began construction on the Winn Science Center, a state-of-the-art addition to our campus that will amplify opportunities for our students to innovate and stretch the boundaries of creativity. This $40 million project was fully funded in advance, thanks to the generous commitment of a relatively small group of passionate donors and will be completed on time and on budget. In January of 2019, the Winn Science Center will open, and renovation work will begin on the McDermott-Green Science Building. In August of 2019, the McDermott-Green Building will reopen and be fully integrated with and connected to the Winn Science Center, creating a comprehensive facility that will, for the first time ever, serve boys across all twelve grades.

Of course, the most gratifying highlights of the past year involved seeing our students thrive and contribute on and off campus. In the classrooms and laboratories, on the playing fields, in the arts studios, and on the stage, Marksmen in the Class of 2018 set an excellent example for boys across the School, constantly seeking to make a difference in the lives of others. Our littlest Lions in Lower School learned the values of empathy and compassion, while boys in the Middle and Upper Schools assumed greater responsibility for the well-being of the community at large. From community service initiatives like McDonald’s Week and the Holiday Gift Drive to our ongoing partnership with Habitat for Humanity and the construction of yet another house in west Dallas, boys continue to learn the importance of care and respect for others.
There are many challenges and opportunities as we look ahead, but your support will help us address them with confidence, determination, and thoughtfulness.
